Common Delicious Breakfast in Indonesia — Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and where you’ll get your energy to get through the rest of the day. Indonesia has some of the most fulfilling breakfasts, so you don’t have to worry about getting hungry before lunch. As rice is a staple food in Indonesia, you’ll find most Indonesian breakfasts consist of rice if not, a type of rice.

Without going any further, here are some Indonesian breakfasts for you to try!

Ketoprak

Ketoprak is a vegetarian dish consisting of ketupat (rice cake), beansprouts, boiled eggs, tofu, boiled vegetables, and rice vermicelli covered in savoury smooth peanut sauce. It usually includes kerupuk too and you’ll be able to find this dish in street vendors. There’s an option for spicy or non-spicy regardless, it’s going to give you a fulfilling breakfast.

Nasi Uduk

If you’re in a hurry but want a satisfying meal for breakfast, then you can go for Nasi Uduk. Nasi Uduk is fragrant rice with different condiments included. Most commonly, there are fried noodles or rice vermicelli, egg, tempeh, chicken, fresh cucumbers, chili peanuts, and fried onions with kerupuk. Most places have the condiments ready to serve, so just order away and they’ll pack it up for you in brown paper lined with banana leaves.

Bakmi

Bakmi is a noodle dish that’s typically eaten when you want something other than rice but still fulfilling. Bakmi ayam, which is chicken bakmi, is the most common type of bakmi you can find and it consists of shredded pieces of chicken in a salty brown sauce. It was brought to Southeat Asia by Chinese immigrants. Bakmi is typically salty from soy sauce, and other spices mixed into the noodle. It’s usually served with a chicken broth with pangsit in it or fried pangsit and bakso.

Bubur Ayam

Bubur Ayam is chicken porridge in Bahasa Indonesia. You’ll be able to find different street vendors selling this in the morning for breakfast. The porridge is thick with shredded chicken, peanuts, scallions, fried shallots, celery, Chinese crullers (cakwe), and crackers. Before lastly drizzled with kecap manis or Indonesian sweet soy sauce. Not only it’s easy to eat but also enough to make you full until lunch.

Gado-gado

Another vegetarian dish you can have for breakfast is gado-gado. It’s an Indonesian salad with steamed vegetables, boiled eggs, potatoes, tofu, tempeh, and lontong under a peanut sauce dressing. It’s one of Indonesia’s national dishes so, the taste is guaranteed to be delicious and you can find it in street vendors or warteg in the morning.

Lontong Sayur

The star of this dish is the lontong, which is a type of rice cake cooked in banana leaves. If you prefer soup for your breakfast then lontong sayur is an option for you. The soup is made out of coconut milk and curry powder that’ll wake up your sense, especially if you put some chili in it. You normally find vegetables like long beans, boiled potatoes, and others in a lontong sayur but depending on the region, you might find something more in it.
