An online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver recorded himself riding with a passenger in Bali. He’s taking the left side of the street and took a stop because the motorcycle in front of him stopped.
Moments later, his motorcycle was struck from behind by a foreign tourist riding another bike.
In the video, the ojol driver pulls over to the left side of the road. Seconds later, a motorcycle carrying three people hits him from behind. The foreign rider then appears to scold the ojol driver before riding away.
The footage was uploaded to Instagram by the account @diyoojol with the caption: “Even though I was in the left lane, I still got hit.”
The clip quickly gained attention online. Viewers debated who was at fault and whether traffic rules had been followed.
Netizens React, Senator Calls for Action
The incident prompted a wave of comments on social media. Some criticised the foreign rider’s behaviour.
“He was scolded by someone who violated driving rules, without a helmet, carrying 3 others,” wrote one netizen.
“Damn, he’s the one who hit him, he’s the one who’s angry,” another commented.
“Three of them on one bike, of course, the bike doesn’t brake properly,” wrote the account @canggulosophy.
Many viewers described the rider’s reaction as inappropriate. Others pointed out what they believed were visible traffic violations, including carrying three passengers on one motorcycle.
The video eventually reached Ni Luh Djelantik, a Bali senator. She reposted the footage on her personal Instagram account and addressed local authorities.
Her caption read:
“To: @imngurahrai @imigrasibali

What Do Traffic Rules Say?
The incident has also raised questions among expatriates and residents about motorcycle regulations in Indonesia.
Under Indonesian traffic rules, riders must obey traffic signs, road markings and traffic lights. Headlights must be switched on both during the day and at night. Riders must use indicators when turning or changing lanes.
Motorcycles are permitted to carry only two people: the rider and one passenger. Riding against the flow of traffic is prohibited. Using a mobile phone or smoking while riding is not allowed. Riders must also maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and stay within speed limits.
Vehicles travelling in the left lane may slow down. However, they should signal clearly if stopping suddenly. At the same time, vehicles behind are required to maintain a safe following distance and control their speed.
