Residents in Gili Trawangan, North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, reported the discovery of an object resembling a torpedo in coastal waters on Monday, 6 April 2026.
The object was first spotted by fishermen who were casting nets at approximately 10:00 WITA. It was later brought ashore for inspection after concerns were raised about its origin and potential risk.
Images and videos of the object circulated widely on social media, with some users speculating that it could be a missile or explosive device.
Local authorities responded after receiving reports from the public. Officers from the North Lombok Police arrived at the scene to secure the area and assess the situation.
Bomb Squad Confirms Object Is Not Dangerous
A Bomb Squad unit from the Mobile Brigade Corps of the West Nusa Tenggara Regional Police, along with personnel from the Criminal Investigation Unit of the North Lombok Police, conducted an initial examination.
The team used a Kerber T detector and a RIIDEye X radioactive detector to assess the object. Both tests indicated that the device did not contain explosives or radioactive materials.
“Initial examination results confirm the object is free of explosives and radioactive materials,” said North Lombok Police Chief, AKBP Agus Purwanta, in a statement on Monday, 6 April 2026, as quoted from Kompas.
Authorities concluded that the object posed no immediate threat to the public.
Further assessment suggested that the device is likely used to measure ocean currents at a specific depth, although full technical identification is still pending.
