Jakarta Government’s Allowed Iftar on Public Transport During Ramadan 2024

During Ramadan 2024, the Jakarta Government introduced a new policy allowing iftar on public transport. This applies to services like KRL, LRT, MRT, and TransJakarta, but passengers must adhere to specific conditions.

Typically, eating and drinking are not allowed on Jakarta’s public transportation. However, recognizing the high mobility of commuters, especially during rush hour after work, this policy aims to facilitate fasting passengers during Ramadan 2024.

Here are the key regulations summarized by Social Expat regarding iftar on public transport that passengers should be aware of:

KRL (Commuter Line)

During Ramadan 2024, PT KAI Commuter Indonesia is instituting special regulations to accommodate passengers who have iftar on public transport once it’s time to break the fast. According to Anne Purba, Vice President and Corporate Secretary of PT KAI Commuter Indonesia, each passenger is allotted a maximum of 1 hour after iftar to consume drinks and snacks on the train.

Additionally, passengers are not allowed to consume food or beverages excessively or those with strong odours. They are also required to maintain cleanliness by refraining from littering.

LRT

 


The Jabodetabek LRT Division has adopted a similar policy, permitting passengers to have iftar on public transport for one hour after the Maghrib call to prayer. However, passengers are prohibited from consuming heavy or strongly aromatic foods while aboard the train.

MRT Jakarta has announced that passengers are permitted to iftar on public transport with water or dates only. However, heavy meals are strictly prohibited, and eating is only allowed during designated times. Passengers are allotted 10 minutes after the iftar time to consume their food or drink and are instructed to dispose of any waste in the nearest trash bin upon disembarking from the train.

TransJakarta also permits passengers to break their fast on public transport, provided they consume light food and beverages. Here are the regulations set by TransJakarta for Ramadan 2024:

  • Passengers on TransJakarta buses are allowed to eat and drink during iftar, within a maximum of 10 minutes after the evening call to prayer.
  • Consumption of rice, spicy foods, and other heavy meals is not permitted.
  • Light snacks and beverages are allowed.
  • Passengers must maintain cleanliness and orderliness.
  • Customers can break their fast with water, dates, or snacks.
  • Customers also have the option to purchase food from retail areas at TransJakarta stops for Iftar.
