Indonesia Braces for Peak Rainy Season, BMKG Warns of Extreme Weather

Rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds has continued to hit several regions across Indonesia.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned the public to prepare for the approaching peak of the rainy season, which is forecast to occur from November 2025 to February 2026.

According to data released on the BMKG website, 43.8 per cent of Indonesia had officially entered the rainy season by the end of October. The agency reported that rainfall is expanding from western to eastern Indonesia and will continue to intensify in the coming weeks.

BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati stated that the current period marks a transition toward the peak of the rainy season.

“We are entering a transition period towards the peak of the rainy season. The public needs to increase their vigilance against extreme weather such as heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and lightning, especially in southern Indonesia, which is starting to be affected by a tropical cyclone system from the Indian Ocean,” she said at a press conference in Jakarta on Saturday (1 November 2025).

Over the past week, very heavy rainfall has been recorded in several regions, including Tampa Padang, West Sulawesi (152 millimetres per day), Torea, West Papua (135.7 millimetres), and Naha, North Sulawesi (105.8 millimetres).

From 26 October to 1 November 2025, BMKG recorded 45 extreme-weather events, mostly caused by heavy rain and strong winds, which led to flooding, landslides, and damage to buildings in several provinces.

Although rainfall intensity is increasing, daily maximum temperatures remain high in parts of the country. Temperatures have reached 37 degrees Celsius in Riau and above 36 degrees Celsius in Sumatra and Nusa Tenggara.

BMKG noted that this unstable atmospheric condition heightens the potential for sudden extreme weather events.

BMKG Warns of Tropical Cyclone Threat and Regional Rainfall Forecasts

Dwikorita also warned of a rising risk of tropical cyclones forming over the Indian Ocean, which could bring extreme rainfall and strong winds to southern coastal areas of Java and Nusa Tenggara.

“A tropical cyclone developing in the Indian Ocean can trigger a drastic increase in rainfall and cause major flooding in coastal areas. We urge local governments to ensure infrastructure and community preparedness for the potential impacts of disasters,” she said.

The agency added that November marks the start of the tropical-cyclone period in southern Indonesia. BMKG has called on communities and regional authorities to remain alert to possible low-pressure systems developing into tropical cyclones during this phase.

In its latest bulletin, BMKG outlined the rainfall forecast for the first week of November 2025, indicating a continued spread of rain across the archipelago.

The agency continues to monitor atmospheric and oceanic conditions daily and will provide updates as new weather data emerge.

Dwikorita concluded by urging the public to stay informed through official BMKG channels and to remain cautious during outdoor activities.

“The weather is changing rapidly. We advise people to check BMKG information regularly before travelling or conducting outdoor work, especially in regions vulnerable to floods and landslides,” she said.
