Foreigners Confused by Bali’s Weather: Rainy and Sunny in the Same Area

Share:

Bali continues to experience heavy rains in January 2025. Yet, at times, the Bali’s weather shifts to sunny skies with bright sunshine. This unpredictable weather has left some foreigners in Bali feeling confused.

One visitor captured the phenomenon in a TikTok video, remarking, “Weather in Bali is bipolar.” In the video, she is seen riding a motorcycle under sunny skies. However, when she points the camera to another area, the scene is cloudy and dark.

Netizens quickly joined the conversation:

  • “Don’t forget to bring your raincoat everywhere, girl. Be safe. The weather is crazy,” commented one user.
  • “The weather here really keeps you on your toes,” added another.

Why Does This Happen?

This phenomenon of different weather in close areas is not uncommon in Indonesia. It’s especially noticeable when rain and sunshine occur simultaneously within a short distance.

As reported by National Geographic, Mulyono R. Prabowo, Head of BMKG’s Public Meteorological Information Division, explains that this condition is typical in Indonesia. It occurs due to various factors, including micro-environmental conditions and wind patterns that carry rain-inducing water vapour.

Areas with more greenery tend to experience rain more frequently. This is because the land’s surface conditions affect how moisture in the air behaves. Wind-carrying water vapour is more likely to produce rain over greener areas than over dense urban zones.

For example, in Jakarta, areas like Ragunan, Lenteng Agung, and Pasar Minggu, known for their green spaces, often have higher rainfall compared to other parts of the city. Similarly like Bali’s weather, highland regions like Bogor experience frequent rainfall due to higher humidity levels.

BMKG Weather Warning: January 14-16, 2025

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for very heavy rain across several regions, including Bali, for the next three days.
