BMKG Indonesia Reveals that Days Without Shadow Occur in Bali

Share:

The island of Bali will experience days without shadow from Sunday, October 13, to Tuesday, October 15. This phenomenon is said to be one of the factors causing the increase in temperature in Bali.

“The weather will be hotter because the sun is now directly above Bali,” BBMKG Region III Observation Coordinator Dwi Hartanto said, as Antara reported.

He added that to see days without shadow, people can put a pencil or an upright object in the middle of a flat field.

When it reaches the time, the upright object has no shadow.

This phenomenon occurs when the sun’s position is right above the island of Bali, so no shadows are formed from upright objects at certain times.

Based on BMKG (Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency) data, shadowless days in Indonesia began on September 8 and continued until an estimated October 19, 2024.

For Bali Province, shadowless days are expected to occur in nine regencies/cities from October 13 to 15, 2024.

Then, the schedule of days without shadows in Bali will take place throughout Bali at varying times in 9 districts and cities, including:

  • Singaraja: Sunday, October 13, 2024, at 12.05 WITA
  • Amlapura: Monday, October 14, 2024, at 12:03 WITA
  • Bangli: Monday, October 14, 2024, 12.04 WITA
  • Negara: Monday, October 14, 2024, 12:07 WITA
  • Denpasar: Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 12.04 WITA
  • Klungkung: Tuesday, October 15, 2024, 12.04 WITA

What is a Day Without Shadow?

BMKG Day without shadow bali indonesia

Quoting from the BMKG official site, Day without shadow is a Major Culmination phenomenon, which is when the Sun is right at its highest position in the sky when the Sun’s declination is equal to the observer’s latitude or zenith point.

As a result, the shadow of an upright object will appear to “disappear” because it overlaps with the object itself. Therefore, the Primary Culmination phenomenon is referred to as the Day Without Shadows.

Given Indonesia’s position around the equator, the phenomenon of Day Without Shadow or Primary Culmination occurs twice a year in Indonesian territory, with a time not far from when the Sun is at the equator. In other cities, this phenomenon occurs when the Sun’s declination is equal to the city’s latitude.

Days without shadows occur twice a year in Indonesia. The first period occurs from February to April 2024, and the second period occurs from September to October 2024.

In this second period, Indonesia will experience days without shadow from September 7 in Sabang, Aceh, to October 21 in Baa, East Nusa Tenggara.
