A video of an Indian vlogger proposing to a woman from the Baduy Tribe in Banten has gone viral across social media.

The clip, which spread widely on X (formerly Twitter) on 29 September 2025, shows the man travelling thousands of kilometres from India to meet a Baduy woman he had spoken to online. The meeting took place on the porch of her simple wooden home in Kanekes Village, Lebak Regency.

“Will you marry me?” he asked.

The woman, sitting calmly in traditional Baduy clothing, responded with a firm shake of her head. “No,” she said softly.

#sukubaduy #india #viral #vlog ♬ original sound – monitorindonesia.com

Her straightforward reply instantly became a talking point online.

Many viewers initially believed the scene was a spontaneous romantic proposal that ended in heartbreak. However, it was later revealed that the moment was staged for content purposes.

The vlogger wanted to highlight the Baduy’s strict marriage customs, which prohibit members from marrying outsiders.

Tradition over Romance

In the video reposted by the Instagram account folkkonoha, the man who does not speak Indonesian used a translation app to communicate in Hindi and English.

“You’re so beautiful,” he said, to which the woman smiled and replied, “Thank you.”

When asked again why she had declined, the woman explained gently, “If a Baduy person marries another Baduy person, not an Indian or any other outsider.”

The Baduy are an indigenous community known for maintaining a way of life deeply rooted in simplicity, tradition, and isolation from modern influences. Within the Inner Baduy in particular, customs are sacred and unalterable. Marriage is a key part of preserving cultural purity and lineage.

The vlogger later clarified that his goal was not to create controversy but to educate viewers about how traditional Baduy values shape daily life. What began as a light-hearted video turned into a cultural lesson for millions online.

Foreign Visitors Restricted from Entering Baduy Dalam (Inner Baduy)

Beyond the viral video, the spotlight has returned to a long-standing rule: foreigners are prohibited from entering the Inner Baduy area.

The Baduy Traditional Institution in Lebak Regency reaffirmed this restriction in early October 2025, following a rise in international visits to the region. The decision strengthens older regulations and extends the ban to include Gajeboh Village, located near the Inner Baduy territory.

“The Customary Institution mandates that foreigners are not allowed to enter Gajeboh. At most, they can only enter Kaduketug Villages One, Two, and Three,” said Oom, Head of Kanekes Village, in a statement quoted by Kompas.com on 3 October 2025.

He added that the rule was endorsed by traditional leaders on 6 and 13 September 2025 to protect the sacredness of the area. “Gajeboh Village directly borders Inner Baduy, so it’s also prohibited,” he said.

Foreign tourists are still allowed to visit other parts of the Outer Baduy if accompanied by a local Baduy or Indonesian national guide. The regulation aims to ensure respect for the tribe’s boundaries and prevent cultural interference.

Local officials, including Farid Surawan, Head of the Creative Economy Division at the Lebak Culture and Tourism Office, confirmed that they had received official notice of the updated rule.

He encouraged all travellers to comply. “We hope both domestic and international visitors will respect the local customs when visiting Baduy,” Farid said.
