Passengers Evacuated on Foot After Jabodebek LRT Disruption

Share:

The Jakarta–Bogor–Depok–Bekasi (Jabodebek) Light Rapid Transit service experienced a technical disruption that forced passengers to be evacuated on foot along elevated tracks on Saturday (25 October 2025). The operator described the measure as a last resort after power to the system was cut.

“Evacuation using the maintenance walkway alongside the tracks is the last option,” said Mahendro Trang, Public Relations Manager for Jabodebek LRT, when contacted on Monday (27 October 2025), as quoted by Detiknews.

Mahendro explained that the preferred procedure is to use another Jabodebek LRT train to collect stranded passengers. “The unaffected train will be stationed adjacent to the affected train so passengers can transfer,” he said. However, during Saturday’s incident, the first option could not be applied.

“Because the power supply to operate the Jabodebek LRT trains was cut off, the entire train set was unable to move,” he added.

Power Cut Halted Services for Over Two Hours

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), the operator of the Jabodebek LRT, confirmed that services were suspended from 08:41 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Western Indonesian Time due to the activation of a protection system that automatically disconnected power.

KAI apologised for the disruption and acknowledged the inconvenience faced by passengers.

“We understand that walking on the side of the tracks is not an easy experience for our users,” the company stated.

“We appreciate passengers’ composure and their compliance with officers’ directions during the evacuation.”

According to KAI, all passengers were safely escorted to the nearest station. Officers accompanied them along the walkway and ensured that safety protocols were followed.

“Thanks to the cooperation of passengers, the evacuation process proceeded safely and under control,” the company said.

Mahendro expressed appreciation to the operational teams who managed the situation.

“We commend the personnel on the train and at the station who implemented emergency response procedures. Each step was handled carefully and coordinated through the Operations Control Centre (OCC) to ensure passenger safety,” he said.

Safety Procedures and Future Improvements

The Jabodebek LRT evacuation procedures are based on safety standards for both passengers and personnel. Before the evacuation began, power to the third rail was completely cut off.

“If a train is unable to continue its journey, passengers are directed to the nearest station via the walkway, accompanied by officers to maintain safety and order,” Mahendro said.

He added that the system also includes an alternative shuttle-train scheme, in which standby trains are positioned near faulty units to facilitate transfer when possible.

KAI reaffirmed its commitment to service reliability and system readiness.

“We are committed to continuously improving the readiness of our personnel, systems, and infrastructure to ensure more reliable service,” Mahendro said.

“Every incident serves as an evaluation point for us to strengthen public trust in the Jabodebek LRT.”

Passengers affected by the disruption received mineral water and fare refunds at the station following the evacuation. The company said these measures were part of its standard customer-care response during service interruptions.
