The OIKN (National Capital Authority of Indonesia) and the CLC (National Development Ministry of Singapore) have agreed to collaborate on the development of the future capital of Indonesia (IKN Nusantara) as a liveable city.

Bambang Sukantono, the head of OIKN, and Desmond Lee, the head of Singapore’s National Development Department, signed an MoU on Thursday, the 16th of March, to work together in Singapore. Twenty Singaporean private companies presented letters of intent to invest in IKN Nusantara at the leaders’ retreat.

The signing took place at the Summit of the Presidents of Indonesia and Singapore, which was attended by both leaders; Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

“Collaboration with various prominent institutions, such as the Center for Liveable Cities, will expedite the achievement of this goal (making Nusantara liveable) and make the IKN (an inclusive city) for all (people),” according to a press release, the head of OIKN said.

He stated that OIKN will enter into several strategic collaborations with the CLC in order to realise Nusantara as a liveable city, such as strengthening knowledge sharing and building capacity.

“From the beginning, IKN has been designed to be not only a green and liveable city but also a city that its residents love.” he continued, “As a result, the IKN Authority continues to collaborate with liveable cities around the world, including Singapore,”

According to the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance, the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Indonesia and Singapore on the development of Indonesia’s new capital (IKN), Nusantara, is a significant step (Indef).

“With Singapore’s interest in participating in IKN (project), it is a significant growth for the Indonesian government to seek investors for IKN development,” Indef Eko Listiyanto economist Eko Listiyanto said when on Thursday, 16th of March 2023.

Listiyanto urged the government to take immediate action following the signing of the MoU.

“Of course, the MoU signed by the Indonesian IKN Authority and the Singapore National Development Ministry’s Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) needs to be followed up on right away,” he said.

He also suggested that Indonesia and Singapore’s collaboration on the development of IKN Nusantara in East Kalimantan be accompanied by the transfer of knowledge and technology.

According to the MoU, the cooperation will include the development of smart and green cities, integrated transportation and infrastructure, resilient buildings, and inclusive communities.

The two organisations will also work together on high-density urban planning, heat and humidity management, and mitigation and adaptation strategies for urban planning and development.

On the same occasion, it was announced that 20 Singaporean companies, including Singapore Telecommunications Limited (Singtel), had submitted letters of intent to invest in IKN.
