A Singaporean student who travelled to Bali suffered memory loss, and a shattered left cheekbone after riding the All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) collided with a coconut tree in Ubud. The 23-year-old Cheng Yu Heng cannot recall the events that led up to the crash on the 3rd of June, 2023, last Saturday.
On Sunday, the 4th of June 2023, the mother of the Singaporean student took a plane to Bali to assist in getting him back home. The next day, they left for Singapore. Once in Singapore, they proceeded to Sengkang General Hospital for treatment from a face trauma specialist.
The Singaporean psychology student informed the local media that he and four of his friends had travelled to Seminyak on the 2nd of June, 2023. He was planning on being there for five days.
On the 3rd of June, Cheng travelled to Ubud with his friends to ride an ATV, or quad bike—a four-wheel motorised vehicle.
This group of Singaporean students had reserved tickets to ride across the lush landscape of Ubud with a company called Periwi Adventure Bali.
Cheng claimed that his ATV was stiff and difficult to steer. He mishandled the wheel as the vehicle descended a hill and slammed into a coconut tree.
The ATV guide took Cheng to a neighbouring clinic, where the doctor suggested transporting Cheng to RSD Mangusada Hospital in Badung.
The Singaporean student was given painkillers and antibiotics shortly after discovering a hairline fracture in his left cheekbone. When asked how he felt after falling, Cheng responded, “I can’t even remember being in Bali.”
One of Cheng’s friends, Yeo Zhi Mi (23), recalled the accident. Yeo explained that Cheng and other friends had already crashed into obstacles several times before the tragedy, thus “at first I wasn’t surprised because it’s his third crash”.
The extent of Cheng’s face wounds became apparent after the ATV driver assisted Cheng in standing up.
“We were like, oh my God, this is serious,” Yeo recalled.
Yeo claimed that Cheng was awake but confused following his crash. She stated that the event’s tour operator arranged and paid for her friend’s transportation and medical care in Ubud.
