Indonesia Grants Visa-Free Entry to Brazil and Turkey for 30-Day Visits

The Indonesian government has officially granted Visa-Free Entry status to nationals of Brazil and Turkey, allowing them to enter the country without a visa for a maximum of 30 days.

The regulation came into effect on 3 July 2025 through the issuance of Minister of Immigration and Corrections Regulation Number 9 of 2025 (Permenimipas No. 9/2025).

This policy marks the expansion of Indonesia’s visa-free access scheme, which previously included 13 countries, bringing the current total to 15.

The move is in line with the government’s broader strategy to strengthen tourism, bilateral relations, and economic engagement with countries that reciprocate similar visa-free privileges to Indonesian citizens.

“Visa-Free Visits can be granted to certain countries based on the results of continuous evaluation, which we also coordinate with related agencies. The main considerations underlying the granting of Brazil and Turkey include that the two countries have already granted Visa-Free Visits for Indonesian citizens,” said Yuldi Yusman, Acting Director General of Immigration, in a press release on Wednesday, 2 July 2025.

The 30-day visa-free period is non-extendable and cannot be converted into another type of residence permit. It applies for purposes such as tourism, attending business meetings, or seeking medical treatment, according to immigration authorities.

The addition of Brazil and Turkey stems from the principle of reciprocity, which is stated in Article 2, Paragraph 3 of Presidential Regulation Number 95 of 2024.

This article outlines that visa exemptions must take into account reciprocal treatment between countries, as well as potential benefits in the areas of state security, tourism, economy, and investment.

“We implement the Free Visit Visa selectively. The Directorate General of Immigration supports economic development by ensuring only qualified and contributing foreign nationals come to Indonesia,” Yuldi added. “We continue to strengthen the supervision of foreigners and continuously evaluate the implementation of Visa-Free Visits to remain in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.”

Initially, the regulation listed 13 countries, primarily within Southeast Asia and select regions with existing diplomatic or economic ties to Indonesia. These include:

  1. Brunei Darussalam
  2. Cambodia
  3. Colombia
  4. Hong Kong
  5. Laos
  6. Malaysia
  7. Myanmar
  8. Philippines
  9. Singapore
  10. Suriname
  11. Thailand
  12. Timor-Leste
  13. Vietnam

The inclusion of Brazil and Turkey on 3 July 2025 extends the scope beyond regional alliances, reflecting Indonesia’s intent to strengthen ties with countries from South America and the Middle East-Eurasia corridor.

This policy aligns with broader efforts by the Indonesian government to stimulate tourism, international business, and cross-border collaboration, especially following global recovery trends in the post-pandemic period.

The Directorate General of Immigration stated that the scheme would continue to be evaluated for compliance with national objectives and to ensure mutual benefit.
