Explosion Near KPK Building Claims One Life

A loud explosion was reported near the headquarters of the Indonesia Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in Setiabudi, Jakarta. The blast was quite substantial and emanated from the rear of the anti-corruption stronghold.

Media personnel stationed at the KPK building immediately rushed to the explosion site.

South Jakarta Fire Department official Bagus Febrianto indicated that the sound of the explosion was linked to a septic tank.

“Yes, earlier, there was information about an explosion from the septic tank. But initially, there were reports of a fire, a gas cylinder explosion, but it turned out to be a septic tank explosion,” stated Bagus when questioned on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.

Bagus mentioned that the septic tank explosion occurred near Taman Tangkuban Perahu, Guntur, South Jakarta, not far from the KPK building. Bagus confirmed that one person had lost their life due to this incident.

Director of the Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Division, Kombes Hengki Haryadi, revealed that, based on the investigation, workers at the scene had acknowledged finding an object resembling a bomb before the explosion occurred.

“What’s clear is that the object suspected to be a bomb was found in the ground and then lifted to the surface,” Hengki told reporters on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.

However, when it was raised, Hengki said that the workers struck the object. Because they didn’t know what it was, the explosion suddenly happened.

“According to witnesses, the object was struck multiple times, and eventually, an explosion occurred,” Hengki said.

Nevertheless, Hengki admitted that his department was still conducting a detailed examination regarding the source of the explosion, which is suspected to be related to the bomb-like object. As a result, the investigative process continues to involve various experts to confirm the origin of the explosion.

“We’re currently examining what this object is, and we’ll present it later. So, we haven’t reached a conclusion yet; conclusions from forensic medicine, forensic laboratory, and the bomb unit will be discussed here in collaboration to determine the type of bomb we found,” he explained.

Separately, the South Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Kombes Ade Ary, mentioned that, as a result of this explosion, four individuals sustained injuries, with one of them losing their life.

“There are four individuals, one person, named A, passed away. They were discovered at the foundation excavation site. Then three other victims sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the nearest health centre,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Ade Ary assured that the explosion did not originate from a septic tank but rather from an object involved in a house construction project.

As of today, the investigation into this explosion case is still ongoing.
