An earthquake strikes in Indonesia with a magnitude (M) of 5.8 occurred in the City of Sukabumi, West Java, Thursday (8/12/2022). The shaking occurred at around 07.50 AM with the epicentre located 22 km southeast of Sukabumi City.
Based on a statement released by the BMKG, the location of the earthquake was at 7.11 south latitude and 106.99 east longitude with a depth of 104 kilometres.
According to a number of residents’ statements, the earthquake was felt in Jakarta, Tangerang, South Tangerang and parts of Banten.
It is not yet known whether the earthquake in Sukabumi has the potential to cause a tsunami, including whether there is an impact on the losses suffered by the community due to the earthquake.

“This is an earthquake on the Indo-Australian plate or a Benioff earthquake. The ground motion is indeed stronger than earthquakes of its class from other sources,” wrote the Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center BMKG, Daryono, via his Twitter account, Thursday (8/12/2022).
“Not the Cianjur shallow crustal earthquake, not even the megathrust earthquake,” he added.
It is known that the earthquake was also felt in Jakarta and its surroundings. Several residents confessed that they felt the earthquake.
“While working, suddenly the computer was shaking, I thought it was a headache due to the night shift, it turned out to be a real earthquake,” said a netizen on Twitter.
“I’m in Jakarta and I really feel it,” said another resident.
