Singapore police have detained a female driver in connection with a traffic accident in Chinatown that killed a six-year-old Indonesian child, the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore confirmed on Tuesday.
Rizki Kusumastuti, a representative of the Indonesian Embassy responsible for information, social affairs, and culture, said the Singapore Police Force (SPF) is still investigating the incident and has named the driver as a suspect.
“The Singapore Police Force is still investigating and investigating the incident. Based on the information we have received, the person concerned has been named a suspect,” Rizki said on Tuesday (February 10, 2026), as quoted by Detiknews.
Rizki said the driver was detained on the same day as the incident. However, he explained that Singapore law limits detention without a court decision.
“Since the first day of the incident, the SPF has immediately detained the person concerned. However, according to Singapore law, a person cannot be detained for more than 48 hours without a court decision,” he said.
The legal process remains ongoing, and Singapore authorities have not released further details about the suspect or potential charges.
Mother Regains Consciousness but Remains in Intensive Care
The Indonesian mother who was hit in the same accident has regained consciousness and is in stable condition, according to the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore.
In response to inquiries from CNA, the embassy said the woman is still receiving intensive medical treatment at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). She remains in the intensive care unit after suffering serious injuries.
The injuries include internal injuries and broken bones. Medical staff are continuing to monitor her condition closely.
“Although the family has expressed the intention to eventually transfer her to Indonesia for further medical treatment, her treating doctor has stated that she is not yet medically fit for evacuation,” the embassy said.
The embassy added that it continues to coordinate with hospital authorities and the victim’s family regarding medical care and further assistance.
Embassy Coordinates Legal and Consular Support
The Indonesian Embassy stated that it has been “coordinating closely” with the Singapore Police Force to monitor developments in the investigation involving the driver.
It also confirmed that consular officials have maintained contact with the victim’s family. The deputy chief of mission and embassy staff met again with the family on Monday.
The meeting was held “to express official condolences and to coordinate further assistance, including the possibility of facilitating legal support if the family requires it,” the embassy said.
The accident occurred on South Bridge Road, near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown, at around 11:50 a.m. on Friday.
Police said at the time that two pedestrians, a six-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman, were taken to hospital conscious following the accident. The child later died from her injuries.
Initial police reports identified the victims as a mother and daughter from Indonesia who were visiting Singapore. This information was later confirmed by the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore.
Authorities have not released further information on the circumstances leading to the collision. Investigations remain ongoing.
