Following the successful hosting of the Archipelagic and Island State (KTT AIS) Forum 2023, the Nusa Dua region is gearing up for another prestigious international event – the 61st Asian-African Legal Consultive Organization (AALCO) – held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) from October 16th to 20th, 2023.

The conference was inaugurated by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. K.H. Ma’ruf Amin, alongside Hj. Wury Estu Ma’ruf Amin, who arrived at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport.

The General Manager of The Nusa Dua, I Gusti Ngurah Ardita, explained that AALCO is a consultative forum for Asian and African countries that emerged from the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung, in which Indonesia played a pivotal role. The forum’s objective is to align perceptions on legal issues and seek common ground to advance the interests of both continents.

“AALCO addresses various legal issues relevant to Asian and African nations, such as maritime law, environmental law, human rights law, and international trade law,” stated Ngurah Ardita.

To enhance security during the conference, Bali Provincial Police deployed 761 personnel to safeguard the 61st AALCO event. Furthermore, at the forefront of domestic security, the Indonesian National Police, particularly the Bali Provincial Police, coordinated directly with the TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) Regional Security Task Force (Satgaspamwil) and other relevant stakeholders to execute the security operation with the code name “Operation Puri Agung VIII-2023.”

The operation was carried out over five days from October 16th to 20th, 2023, at the BNDCC in Nusa Dua, Bali, emphasizing pre-emptive and preventive activities, supported by law enforcement and public relations efforts to ensure the smooth, orderly, and successful conduct of the 61st AALCO event.

Apart from the main agenda, the AALCO forum features a series of side events, including a business forum aimed at promoting investment in Indonesia and discussions on international humanitarian law. The 61st AALCO annual session will be attended by 47 member countries, 2 permanent observer countries, 42 observer countries, 2 observer authorities, and 24 observer organizations. Ardita expressed hope that the successful organization of the KTT AIS Forum 2023 in The Nusa Dua region a while ago will continue into the hosting of similar international MICE events, such as the AALCO forum, commencing today, Monday, October 16th.

“We are confident that the 61st AALCO will run smoothly and comfortably for all delegates, participants, and organizing committees, as our region is prepared in terms of security systems, infrastructure, and facilities,” he declared.

Ngurah Ardita expressed deep appreciation to the organizers and the government for choosing The Nusa Dua as the venue for this international diplomatic forum. Throughout the AALCO forum, security checks and inspections for entry to The Nusa Dua will be conducted at the entrances in accordance with international event security standards. Ngurah Ardita added that the ITDC, which manages the region, will also coordinate with the relevant security team to ensure the successful, secure, and smooth arrival, forum proceedings, and departure of delegates.

“With various preparedness and the completeness of the region’s facilities, we are ready to welcome delegates and all stakeholders in our region for the 61st AALCO event next week,” Ngurah Ardita remarked.

About AALCO 2023

The 61st Annual Meeting of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) in Bali is an international event to be hosted by Indonesia from October 16 to October 20, 2023.

This event will address various legal issues relevant to Asian and African countries, such as maritime law, environmental law, human rights law, and international trade law.

Established in 1956, AALCO is an intergovernmental organization aimed at enhancing cooperation and exchanging views on legal issues of common interest between Asian and African countries. AALCO was a significant outcome of the 1955 Asian-African Conference (AAC) in Bandung.

AAC was the brainchild of the Father of the Nation, the First President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno. Soekarno’s vision of independence and unity across Asia and Africa did not emerge overnight. Since the 1930s, these issues have been voiced in various discussion forums. All that fervour was then encapsulated in the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung.

Currently, AALCO has 47 member countries, consisting of major countries from Asia and Africa, including Indonesia, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, and South Africa, among others.
