  • Neighbouring countries: Indonesia has land borders with Malaysia on the island of Borneo, Papua New Guinea on the island of New Guinea, and East Timor on the island of Timor. Indonesia is also a neighbour of Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and the Philippines.
  • Geography: Indonesia is an archipelago of over 17,000 islands. It has five main islands; Sumatra, Java, Borneo (known as Kalimantan on the Indonesian side), Sulawesi, and New Guinea. The land itself is quite mountainous and covered by dense tropical forests. It also has many active volcanoes since it is located along the Ring of Fire.
  • Political system: Unitary presidential constitutional republic. It places in the framework of a presidential representative democratic republic whereby the President of Indonesia is both head of state and head of government and of a multi-party system. The governmental system has been described as “presidential with parliamentary characteristics”.
  • Major religions: Islam/Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic, Confucianism
  • Main language: Bahasa Indonesia
  • Money: The currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR)
  • Tipping: Tipping in Indonesia is standard 10 to 15 percent in restaurants. Round up the bill for taxis is advisable.
