21st September 2022 – Labour workers, who are members of the Labour Party, Federation of Indonesian Metal Workers Union (FSPMI), and the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPO) rallied in front of DKI Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday (21/09). Due to this, Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan is closed off as masses of labourers occupy the road precisely in front of the DKI Jakarta City Hall.

As a result, the traffic in Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan to Patung Arjuna Wijaya or Patung Kuda region will be diverted in the opposite direction.

The road from Patung Kuda to Gambir Station is divided into two (contraflow), namely for vehicles towards Gambir and vice versa.

There are a couple of policemen directing traffic and motorists across a segment of Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan which is not closed off due to the crowd. Traffic congestion also happened due to the labourers protesting in one section of Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan.

Labour Party President, Said Iqbal, said that there are as many as 500 people rallied up in front of the governor’s and deputy governor’s workplaces. He also said that the demonstration happened due to three demands from the labourers.

First is that labourers deny the price increase of fuel oil (BBM), the second is to deny omnibus law and the last is the demand to raise the regional minimum wage in 2023 by 13 percent.

There are demonstrations from various elements of society continue to take place in a number of regions in Indonesia. This is a response of the public towards the increase in fuel oil that is Pertalite, Solar, and Pertamax price that was announced by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

A new price for subsidized and non-subsidized fuel oil is valid since Saturday, 3rd September 2022 at 2:30 PM WIB.

Currently, the price for Pertalite increased to IDR 10,000 per litre from IDR 7,650. Meanwhile, subsidized Solar rise from IDR 5,150 to IDR 6,800 per litre and Pertamax from IDR 12,500 to IDR 14,500 per litre.
